Principal's Sunday Evening Message - October 2nd

Good Evening Andover Star Parents,

This is your Principal, Mr. Duncan with what’s going on over at Andover, for our upcoming short week.

As you know, there is NO school tomorrow as the District continues to check on and repair various school locations that were damaged during the storm and takes into consideration damage, flooding and loss of power in our neighborhoods. I personally visited Andover last Friday morning and was happy to see we had NO damage. The Power was on, the A/C was working, no trees were down and there was no flooding. So, we look forward to welcoming our students, families, and staff back to campus on Tuesday, October 4th. In addition, this coming Friday, October 7th is a student non-attendance day! Teachers will be on campus working on Report Card Grades but students will NOT come to school.

Our on-campus restaurant is serving the following selections this week:

Tuesday-Chicken Nachos, Lettuce & Tomatoes, Tangerines

Wednesday-Hamburgers, Vegetarian Beans, Orange Slices

Thursday-Garlic French Bread Pizza, Steamed Broccoli, Sliced Apples

Every year OCPS collaborates with Orange County Health Hero’s to provide flu vaccines to ALL consented children regardless of their health insurance coverage. These Flu vaccines are provided with NO out-of-pocket expense to students. Your student received consent forms for you to sign so they can participate on the FREE flu shots clinic that we will be hosting here at Andover on Thursday, October 20th. If you need an extra form, just contact your child’s teacher.

The FLDOE created a free reading program that provides a free book by mail during each month of the school year, along with reading activities for families to use together to help your child enjoy reading. To be a part of this program, register your child at to learn more about the program and to enroll your student today. Once registered, they also eligible for $500 in Scholarship funds to help them improve their reading. Parents can learn more at

We’ve rescheduled last week’s PTA and SAC which will meet in the are meeting in the Media Center THIS Tuesday, October 4th. PTA is meeting at 5:00-6:00pm and SAC is 6:00-7:00pm. If you are NOT a member of PTA yet, I’d encourage you to join…that’s WHY it’s called the PARENT teacher Association after all. If you want to know about decisions made in the running of Andover Elementary, come to the SAC meeting…and yes, they are now both F2F.

Our Ignite Academics Club that meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:30am is for students who are in Grades 3-5 who want additional assistance or practice to get better grades. If you want your child to participate OR just want more information about it, check with their teacher.

We cancelled our Fall Picture Day with Strawbridge Studio’s because of the storm. As soon as we have a confirmed future date we’ll let you know as far in advance as possible.

That’s it for tonight, I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend, as well as an extra day, have a VERY starry night. Goodbye for now.

Mr. Kevin J. Duncan, MA Ed.
